NewAir AC-10100E Portable Air

NewAir AC-10100E Portable Air Conditioner

NewAir AC-10100E Portable Air Conditioner

I purchased this back on Feb 3rd 2015 for my home office (small, roughly 10x10 room) as to supplement the central AC of my home. I Live in Arizona so during the summer it's not uncommon to see 120+ temperatures. I typically run the central air thermostat at 79, but with it 120+ outside, it still tends to feel a few degrees warmer than 79... however, setting it any lower can easily lead to 300+ electric bills here... and this is where this little AC unit has been most valuable, by utilizing it in the room I tend to occupy most during the summer, to keep the summer electric bills way down.

Even though I've had it since Feb 2015, I have never once had to have any maintenance performed on it... I do consistently wipe it down, keep the filters clear of dust and have even used compressed air to assist with removing more dust build up. Since I have not had to contact customer service, my rating is not reflective of that.

I have decided though, whenever this current one does start to show it's age.... I will replace it with one from the same company, NewAir.

TO ANYONE BUYING ANY KIND OF PORTABLE A/C: Make sure you're letting the unit stand upright for 24 hours before even plugging it in. If you don't, then there will be problems with the unit as a result. THIS IS PROBABLY WHAT MOST PEOPLE END UP IGNORING, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THEIR BRAND-NEW UNIT! PLEASE DO THIS!

TL;DR version: Good for the price, a bit noisy . Treat it right and you have a best friend for the summer!

So, after my mother had one of these units for quite some time, I decided to get one for my own bedroom because it is a room that gets unbelievably warm in the summer, even if the home's A/C is working. The window unit is pretty good, despite it feeling flimsy at first touch. The hose as well is a bit thin but not too thin that it's a junk heap, but it does slightly irradiate heat when the compressor is on (not enough to affect the temperature of the room, mind). It also remains stiff due to the ridged design which made it a bit hard to finely adjust the position of the unit in the room.

All that said, holy crap did it cool the room down like amazing. A special note to those using this unit is to turn it off of the automatic setting. Automatic causes it to just kind of default to 75 for some reason, so switching it to manual A/C allowed my unit to actually cool down to the temperature I set it to and then switched to fan mode until the temperature went up again. If I felt particularly hot, I could aim the vent on the front toward me to cool me off, otherwise I normally aimed it upward to get the air circulated.

Noise-wise, the fan makes as much noise as a low-setting house fan which is negligible, however it does make a loud sound when switching on the compressor which is also a fair bit loud. Some people call it white noise, I managed to fall asleep despite the compressor running but not sure I actually slept well that night. Basically, your mileage may vary in terms of noise. It did make recording obnoxious because the sound carried enough to be picked up even on low gain settings on the opposite side of the room, so if you plan to use this A/C in a room where recording takes place, then I hope you like getting up close and personal with your mic otherwise it's going to pick it up like mad.

I live in Louisiana, so there's a good reason to get this kind of A/C rather than the other, much cheaper kind. This thing does pull in humidity from the air to cool, but I never did have to drain it once in all the time using it so don't even ask me where to drain it (it has a sensor light to tell you it needs draining but not once did it come on). On the downside, this does mean the air in the room gets dry. Real dry. I ended up with a bit of a persistent cough because of it, so if you're like me and have some breathing issues then just keep that in mind and try not to sleep with it on. Also, when you're not using it, make sure to remove the window unit and close your window otherwise the turned-off A/C will be letting air from inside your house flow outside. This isn't a design flaw: it's a part of the unit being "portable".

So, all in all, it may sound like an expensive as heck unit. Trust me when I say it is worth the expensiveness because it made my summer such a breeze... No pun intended. Just make sure you're following all the steps of setting up the unit, be gentle with it, and make sure to let it stand upright for 24 hours before you plug it in where you need it. The only real issue is noise.

This unit never really seems to cool my entire room (which is small) as cold as I'd like it to (I like my room COLD), but I also have a cramped space so I think a lot of the cold air can be lost when blowing near/against furniture. But I also couldn't imagine going another summer without this baby. The air that comes out is really cold and it's been a huge life-saver in the hot months. It'll make the room a bearable temperature, and sitting directly in front of it you'll actually get cold.

After almost a year 24/7 to cool down my computer room, still running fine.
I just wish there was a mode where the fan would be off when the compressor is off, because if your goal is to keep a room at low temperature, you don't want to push the air out when that air has been cooled down.
What happens without this mode I dream of, is this cycle:
1. cool down the room and push hot air out
2. stop cooling down, room is now cold
3. keep pushing air out and therefore, pushing cool air out and getting outside air in (if you can push air out, it takes some air from somewhere else)
That is not smart. No air should be pushed out when not cooling down.

Unit came as described. Got it in 2 days even with the free shipping option so definitely can't complain there. Hot summer in a house with no AC and no insulation means it stays hot through the night. This AC unit has provided much needed relief.

Pros:
Blasts cool air!
Easy to set up
Casters for easy moving across the house (when wood floors are present)

Cons:
Hose is a bit difficult to deal with at times, falls out easy
Buttons on unit have icons - would have been more user friendly if it just had the word for what the button actually does
Front air vent doesn't have much angle adjustment as I would like.

THIS ITEM IS SUPRISINGLY BETTER THAN A LOT OF THE MORE EXPENSIVE ITEMS,
YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT, FOR SOME REASON IT TAKES A WHILE FOR IT TO GET GOING,
LITERALLY LIKE 3 DAYS FOR IT TO INITIALLY COOL THE ROOM, AFTER THAT IT'S ON CRUISE CONTROL :)

Nice unit--easy to install and standing up to the almost impossible task of keeping our computer room moderate. The air handler on our daily A/C in the computer room freezes when we have temps in the teens and below. This unit was purchased so that we can keep the temperature in the low 70's.

The unit works great and I had a great experience with the customer service representative. My unit was missing the remote control so I sent New Air an email and after a few days I received an email from the representative asking me to contact her. The representative was courteous and informed that the remote would be sent to me that day. It was received two later.

The price went up to $589!! Glad I bought this in March at $299 expecting AC prices would go up. This unit does its job and for the first time, our bedroom is cool when the weather gets hot. It is a bit noisy, but the level is not too bad that we can't sleep through it. Installation was super simple. It came with a kit and hose as stated.

It's not as attractive as the Honeywell in this price range, but what sold me was the auto-evaporative feature. The reason I needed one was because I used to have to drain my old AC every week, and eventually it started leaking even after being drained (probably because I didn't drain it often enough). That bet paid off. I've had this thing a month and haven't had to drain it once. In fact, I tried draining it just now and nothing came out at all. I was so impressed that I decided to write this review.

Pros:
-The temperature sensor works great–if I set it to the right temperature, it seems to switch from fan to A/C at the exact moment I start to feel too cold or too hot.
-Doesn't take up too much space and the wheels work nicely.
-Auto-evaporates so you don't have to drain it often
-According to the manual, it beeps and flashes when the water tank is full, so you don't have to drain until it really needs it.
-Hose is a pretty good length.

Cons:
-I move it around a lot, and as other people have said, the hose can fall out fairly easily when you're moving it around. Worth it though.
-Doesn't come in other colors.
