I purchased the unit to cool a 2-car garage. Approximately 400 square feet. The unit is rated for 300 square feet, and expectations were low. Boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. My measurements show:

Ambient temperature: 103 degrees
Inside garage: 85 degrees
Difference: 17 degrees

I was a little concerned about buying an inexpensive evaporator for my greenhouse. And then one showed up dead on arrival with a bad water pump. Their customer service immediately sent a replacement part and now both of my units are doing a great job dropping my greenhouse about 14F degrees. Very pleased with their customer service.

I docked a star because of bad design, once I saw the control panel up front. This is part of a trend where equipment made for outdoor / hot conditions uses soft plastic "buttons" over electronic switches and the buttons do multiple functions. I'd rather see equipment in harsher conditions use mechanical knobs and switches - these can resist the sun/heat more and another benefit is I can pre-set the controls I want and put the entire machine on a timer. That way when it powers up automatically it is immediately in the mode I want without manual intervention. As designed I can't do that.

I bought this as an a/c alternative for when Vegas isn't over 100 degrees. Just to re-iterate, this will not work in humid environments. It works great, sometimes I don't even need A/C, granted it hasn't been scorching hot yet this year. I put this up on the second story loft of a 2000 sq foot home, and on warm days it can keep the entire house comfortable, cooling down the hot air that makes it's way upstairs.

Pros: Cheap to run (230W), fairly quiet (42 dB at 1m to the side, on low, vs 25 dB ambient), cools as advertised, large water tank, easy to fill up, low water auto shutoff
Cons: Could be quieter, goes through ~0.5 gal/hr so you'll fill it up multiple times a day for all-day use.

I use this in a classroom in Southern California. It puts out a lot of water into the air. I feel that it also cleans the air. I think it is helping to keep us healthy. I haven't had a chance to use it on a really hot day yet, so I can't really evaluate the cooling capacity. But, I'm glad I got it. One thing I do not like is it isn't that quiet.

It was 98 degrees with all the family coming over. Placed this outside in the patio and let it run and it works wonderfully. It's nice that two sets of blades oscillate up and down and left and right if you want it to. Comes with a remote control which makes it easy. It has a nice three speed option.
Even my cat plopped himself right in front of it to cool off.

Description

Spend more time outdoors with Honeywell Outdoor Evaporative Coolers (Swamp Coolers) keeping you and your family cool all summer long. Outdoor Fans help to circulate warm air, Outdoor Mist Fans cool by spraying wet mist over your furniture and serving area. Honeywell Outdoor Evaporative Coolers provide a powerful cool breeze without wetting you and your guests. Like a breeze flowing across a lake, Honeywell Evaporative Coolers provide a natural, cool breeze with the power of water evaporation. Honeywell Evaporative Coolers combine 3 appliances: Evaporative air cooler, fan and humidifier - into one compact energy-saving system. A fan alone creates a breeze by recirculating warm air, but when you add water and/ice to the tank, Honeywell Evaporative Coolers reduce the temperature of incoming warm air, transforming it into a cool moist breeze. Honeywell Portable Air Coolers are built to last and carefully crafted with the science of aerodynamics to minimize energy consumption while maximizing the airflow. An evaporative air cooler offers an energy efficient cooling option when the air is hot with low humidity, such as desert areas like the southwestern United States (recommended humidity level is 60% or less for maximum efficiency).

Totally worth it. Cools my large den down. Saved me from installing air conditioning. I'll buy a couple smaller ones next summer for bedrooms without A/C.

I was pretty skeptical of this at first considering the reviews are pretty passionately for or against. But for me it's worked like a charm. I add a gallon of cool water to it and throw some ice in the ice tray and run it for about two hours before I go to bed and it cools my whole room down significantly. A real lifesaver during the hot spells we've had here in LA the last few weeks. Definitely doesn't cool down the room like a window unit does, but I was pretty impressed with how much cooler my room is. Pretty cheap to run too.

This is used to cool an upstairs room with a loft. Because it is a swamp cooler, it is a wet cooling system which gives out the humidity. I hoped it would cool a little better than it does although it will work for now. We will try ice in the top this year. It is a nice unit and love the remote.

I live in California the Vince beach area. it works great to cool off the room. I like that it had a place to put ice to give it that extra cooling and a easy to read water level.

Great product! I am living in a top-floor apartment with a westward window. So as you can imagine, during summer time here in Bay Area, it gets ridiculously hot -- when the outside is 85 degrees, the apartment could get to ~100! Our landlord does not allow AC to be installed, so, the evaporative cooler is the thing to go! Now I am sitting in my living room with a very comfortable temperature, clearly cooler than other rooms without the cooler fan.

Noise is a bit larger than I expected, both from the water flowing around the machine and from the fan itself. Not unbearable during day time (and I am currently on low speed), but could be an issue if you plan to use it during sleep time. So one star deducted because of that.
