BLACK + DECKER BPACT08WT Portable Air Conditioner, 8,000

BLACK + DECKER BPACT08WT Portable Air Conditioner, 8,000 BTU

Sometimes shopping online is difficult because reviews are all over the place. I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews and purchased this unit! Is it as quiet as having central a/c? No, of course not. And you’re not very bright if you expect it to be. When it’s running I don’t even have to turn the volume up for the television. Our window unit was absolutely deafening and we could barely talk to each other even when sitting side by side on the sofa. Forget hearing the tv. So this was a pleasant surprise. I’d read so many reviews that it was noisy.

We put this in the corner of the living room and having it pointing toward the middle of the living room which is approximately 15’x30’. Sea he vent to the window and it is nicely hidden by my drapes (and some other stuff lol). I set it to 74 and the room cooled down within 10 minutes. The living room is longer than it is wide and we sit about 20 feet away from the unit. The living room leads into the dining/kitchen and I can feel it all the way in there so I’d say it cools nicely.

I thought about buying a 2nd unit for the master bedroom but decided since this is portable I’ll just roll it in there.

Pros:

Attractive (more so than a window unit)
Portable
Multifunction (cools and dehumidify)
Cools quickly and quietly
Covers a pretty large area
Remote control makes life easier for couch potatoes
No unsightly window unit banging away and blocking your view out the window

Cons:
Window vent was too wide for the window and we had to cut it to size. It would be nice if the manufacturer made a shorter panel.

All in all I am very pleased with this unit and would highly recommend it.

Love this portable AC unit. Bought it for our upstairs master bedroom which is about 400 sq ft. Didn't want to run the Central AC unit for the 2,200 sq ft house just for one room at night, so made sense to purchase this unit.

Good:
+ Cools the room fast!
+ Looks great
+ Doesn't need to have the water emptied so often. Maybe once or twice during a hot season.
+ Easy to install and set up.
+ Not as noisy as I thought. The fan is quiet and when the compressor kicks in you turns up the decibels, but doesn't bother me. Sounds like the AC units in the Las Vegas rooms.
+Exhaust hose and components seem to do a great job of not letting heat back into the house. Make sure the space between the unit and your window is fairly short.

What can be improved:
- Bright blue display lights will illuminate your entire room. I have to cover it with a magazine at night to keep it dark.
- The weather strips and seals that come with it are cheap and tear easily. Make sure you get them on right the first time. Otherwise, prepare a trip to your local hardware store.
- The 3 piece section that is put into your window isn't even and gives for small spaces which allow hot air to enter. Easily solved by using some duct tape to seal it.

PS 1. Remember to let it stand for 24 hours before operating.
PS 2. This unit pulls 10.8 amps. Make sure that the AC plug you are using doesn't strain your fuse box and cause it to trip. I used it where there were other lights, TVs and a Playstation running and it tripped my fuse box that was rated for 15 amps.

I have tested this product for about 2 months now, here is my findings.

1) it is a small AC for a 14,000 BTU, ideal if you are trying to save space.

2) The sliding window panels used to connect to the vacuum cleaner looking attachment isn't sturdy enough enough, the plastic pieces tend to bend when trying to connect. Luckily I had my old window set up from my 12k BTU Amana portable AC which was much more durable. I suggest B&D make those sliding window panel a heavier.

3) it blows ICE WATER cold when running optimal, but there is a catch here. The fans on this unit seems very sensitive to obstruction of air through the rear vent. I noticed after a day or two of running the fans started to malfunction to the point it sounded broken and I had to turn it off. I took the screen out and started it up again and it instantly started running great. To further test I put a piece of towel over a small portion of the fins at different points and the fans started to instantly malfunction. I think this is the give-to-get rule with a 14k BTU AC this small, because of its size you have to keep the screen VERY CLEAN at all times. I washed it every time I use it, and I have yet to have malfunctioning fan issues. When clean it blows very cold as will do so on any fan speed.

4) the remote works well, it can pick the signal up without you facing it with all options working immediately.

5) The unit has strong fans, it can blow air 10-15 feet up or down depending on how you adjust the louver's. It was able to cool a 400sq ft space that was 80 degrees to 67 degrees in a half hour, it's a little bull dog of an AC and it will run through the night.

6) if you are lazy, don't buy this, to get optimal performance you need to clean it/drain the water etc more often, but the reward is it kicks ass on a hot day.

The central air in my house is broken and it would cost me nearly $7,000 to fix it so I decided to pass and buy this portable air conditioner and it gets the job done for a far less price. It’s only been a couple of days since I’ve used this thing and it’s been a LIFE SAVER. It gets up to 110F where I am and this ac unit cools down my room within minutes! I set it to turn off after 1 hour to save energy. I don’t expect this thing to cool down my entire living room but I always go to my room after work and I’m satisfied so far. My only complaints is the less than helpful instruction manual to set this up but you can get an idea on how to install this thing from YouTube, my other complaint is that it’s fairy loud but honestly the benefit far outweighs the cons so it gets 5 stars in my book. I’ll be sure to update my review if I encounter any problems, but as of now I’d highly recommend this unit if you want to beat the summer heat every year.

UPDATE 08/19/18: It has been about 2 months since I’ve bought and used the unit now and I still stand by what I said about this device, it is a LIFE SAVER! My area has been consistently hot all summer with temperatures ranging from 99F - 107! And not once did I ever feel the summer heat indoors. This was definitely worth the purchase and is an amazing investment for future summers to come.

Man where do I start? First off, LOL at some of these reviews! Bad reviews because it came damaged? That's not even fair to the products usefulness whatsoever. Not as good as a window unit? I mean, yeah window units are efficient because they don't have to discharge through a long HOT hose that's still inside your house. And no one is buying these units to cool down an entire warehouse, so obviously it's going to be noisy in a smallish room. I'd say the 10k unit is very average on noise.

It's very cool and so far seems to be very high quality. I am very happy with it.

To start things off, I'm not usually a real big B+D fan. I know well enough to know that, like most GIANT name brands, the name doesn't actually necessarily indicate who built the unit, but rather who's marketing and supporting it. For all I know, this has 90% of the same guts as an LG unit. (LG is regarded as the leader in portable/window AC units, as well as Frigidaire).

The product arrived in the retail box, which looks to be able to serve double duty as a shipping container because it is very sturdy, and it's assembled in such a way that it would just about collapse if it were shipped any way other than "this side up", and it's clearly marked as such on the box in many spots so you shouldn't run into the issue some reviewers talking about where they need to let it stand vertical for 24 hours prior to plugging it in and letting the pump go to work.

I'm not exactly stupid, but there's a few things about this product that don't make a whole lot of sense, or are done in a needlessly complicated (cost saving) way. To be fair though, this is my first time dealing with a portable AC unit so maybe they're all like this to one degree or another (get it?!)

First, the window vent blocking plate situation... I'm in an older house with small windows, so I had to cut one of the panels so that it would give me the correct length. This is some pretty heavy plastic, and I don't think it's reasonable to expect the typical consumer to even have the means to be able to cut one of these pieces of plastic. A hacksaw worked fine. Then you need to secure each of the telescoping panels (just shallow "C" channels, essentially) into eachother with screws so it becomes one unit.... this is supposed to be a PORTABLE AC unit. If I really did buy this with the intent of moving it from one room to another, I'd be screwed since it's doubtful that each window is exactly the same size, and changing the size of the plate is not exactly a breeze. I expected to see a more well thought out design for the window plate. Luckily, this thing is staying upstairs in my attic-bedroom that easily reaches very warm temps on even a slightly warm day, and the central AC cannot keep up with it.

Another gripe is the remote, and overall interface of operating the machine. The top/face of the machine has the love-em-or-hate-em capacitive touch buttons that provide no tactility, but instead a beep. Whatever, it works. Doing anything beyond turning it on and off and up and down requires the remote, which seems to send discreet commands for each incremental increase or decrease in temp, so that the temp displayed on the remote is never "out of sync" with the unit, as long as you change the temp at least once with the remote. It's just an infrared send-only type of signal. The real confusion comes in setting the sleep/wake timer. I read the directions and I can't figure it out. I just operate it manually when I wake up and before I go to bed, which leads me to another gripe

The thing is loud! I understand that in order for an AC unit to work, it has to move air, but even with the fan on low (which is useless because it does not push the cool air far enough towards me) the unit makes too much noise to sleep with running. I could probably get around this by moving it to the other side of the room, but I don't want to (just yet) so I just put up with it.

Most of the marketing graphics/information on this product's Amazon listing are either glossed over, or just plain incorrect. The picture that shows the exhaust vent is wrong, since it gets connected to an ovular shaped thing, and then goes out the window, and the filter does not slide out, you snap the holder out of the back, and snap the filter out of the holder. Another instance of Marketing Gone Wild.

But, it blasts out pretty cool air pretty quickly, and it's working to keep a somewhat large, low-ceiling attic bedroom at a comfortable 74 degrees even when it's hovering around 100 outside, so I have to give it some credit. The "AirSwing" feature is nice- you can position the unit at an angle (in my case, the only way to get it closer to the wall and deal with the unwieldy hot-air hose coming out the back) and pitch the vents so it's still blowing as if it were positioned straight ahead. I suppose in a more open space, it would be helpful to share some of the cool air with your visitors or other house dwellers.

So, why buy this instead of a window unit? I can yank out the plate and roll it into a closet at the end of our 2 month summer and let it sit for the other 10 months or so, instead of futzing with big drippy, rusty rectangles and angle brackets or 2x4s screwed into the stucco.

We'll see how well the atomization of water goes as far as its ability to dehumidify. The manual promises that emptying moisture from the unit only needs to be done at the end of the season, once, but it also says the sleep timer works.

Great quality air conditioner!! Just moved to NYC and this is my first time with an external air conditioner (I've had Central AC my whole life) so I was a little nervous on how to install and hoping I would get a good one but I'm so glad I got this one!

Does it's job and cools, it's a little loud but what air conditioner is totally quiet anyways...

I've posted a photo and video for everyone to see how loud it is. In the video it is on the lowest fan mode in the cooling setting.

This unit replaced an air cooler that I bought last year and this has been an absolute God send! I completely regret buying that air cooler and wish I would have thought of ordering this air conditioner instead!! I work night shifts and sleep, of course, during the heat of the day and this unit has worked beautifully cooling my bedroom down to a comfortable level. We have been having "a heat wave" if you want to call it that in my state with an average of 95 degrees and it has been doing an excellent job of keeping my bedroom cool and comfortable. Now, I've been reading some of the negative reviews about its cooling abilities and all I can say is that read what this units ability to cool is. I don't have the manual in front of me, but I believe it states it can cool a 200 square foot room, so if it's any larger, yeah, it might not do what you want it too. Other reviews talked about a difficulty to install but I had no problems. I have a very large side opening window and I ordered a widow kit (also off Amazon) that basically is strips of Velcro that you attach to your window and frame and attach a zippered material that fills in the gap between the two and you unzip where you want the exhaust hose to vent out of and it's simple as that! I don't live in a humid state so I can't say if the tank fills up with water often but the manual states that it shouldn't often? I'm sure that depends in the area you live but I don't think I'll have to worry about that but that seemed to be another "complaint" about his unit. So far, as an owner of a few days, I have absolutely no complaints. Easy to set up, cools my room perfectly and is so much quieter than an air cooler. I can hear my tv even on the highest fan setting. I also like the fact that I can heat my room in the winter so this unit can be used year round for me! I think if you can make sure it's capable of cooling your room, you won't be disappointed!

And just for an update: Been using the heat setting and it works great! Real warms the room up! You just have to find a place for the vent to blow the cold air either outside or towards another room. I have the vent point downstairs and it works just fine. This unit really has been worth every penny

OK. To those who have been looking for indoor Air Conditioner for smaller room, I recommend this one. - PLEASE NOTE - Till today, no one, no human, no engineer were able to invent 100% perfect flawless indoor Air Conditioner, this one seemed to be THE BEST OPTION. . . .

For 20 years, I have been using many different brand A/C units. All of them performed the cooling process well but ALL of THEM have some issues or flaws (such as Loud Noise, water dripping, excessive power-consumption, filter jammed or handle broke off). . .

This BLACK & DECKER 14000 A/C unit seemed to be the best machine to cool down your heated room. After I have been using and observing for 3 years, I begin to write this review to provide useful information for other people and consumers so that they can avoid mistake or wasting money on wrong purchase.

As i mentioned above, no indoor A/C units in the world is 100% perfect so this A/C unit has a few minor imperfection (This is NOT a flaw) as below:
(1) NOISE
It sounds a rather loud noise (fan noise) when it is running. But the noise is lower than other brand A/C units. I used USA Court Approved Sound Level Meter (the device i bought for $300 online) to measure the sound level of this unit and the Standard Measurement of Loudness turned out to be 69 DB (Decibels) . It is much lower than the measurement on other product (IMPACCA A/C unit which I bought from Home Depot Store) which 91 DB.
So this BLACK & DECKER A/C unit is considered to be OK, GOOD and ACCEPTABLE.
If you do not accept this noise level, you may never find quieter one elsewhere.

(2) POWER CONSUMPTION
Of course, all A/C units in the world consume a lot of power so you should expect to see increase in cost on electricity bill if you run A/C unit. I live alone in a 3600 square feet luxury apartment room. I noticed that my MONTHLY electricity bill cost increase from $100 to $150 after running this A/C unit. This amount is acceptable and reasonable for me.
FIRE CAUTION -
When I set cooling temperature DOWN to 64 degree Fahrenheit, it pull a lot of power. When summer heat rises above 100 Fahrenheit, the power cord wire become over-heated and safety fuse cut down power automatically to avoid causing fire and subsequently my entire apartment room was out of power. I always set cooling temperature to 70 Fahrenheit and no more trouble. So it is important to set cooling temperature at safe degree to avoid fire hazard.

Please Note :
Above imperfections do not make this A/C unit a bad one. These are normal and common minor issues for every A/C unit. If you are aware of these issues and prepare for them, everything will be alright.
This BLACK & DECKER 14000 BTU A/C unit is still a GOOD PRODUCT and THE BEST OPTION to cool your place down. This unit is do the work well to cool down for my small cozy apartment room 60 x 60 feet.
This is the best one I have ever found in the last 20 years.
I recommend this A/C unit for your purchase option.
Try it and you will like it.

I love this machine. It is a literal life saver! You do need to vent it through a window (which is easy for me and I can’t put hardly anything together) but otherwise super simple set up. I used it in a medium sized casita and in my sons bedroom side our ac in our apartment is crap. Keeps a single room nice and chilly and I haven’t had it freeze on me yet. Keep in mind it won’t keep your whole house cool. Great for a bedroom, or a living room, but not your whole first floor or anything.

But damn the air is cool and it doesn’t quit out. I love this thing!
